La Dolfina keeps its crown

Polo’s reigning dynasty won its third consecutive Argentine Open title today, reasserting itself as top dog in the polo world.
With a 16-15 overtime victory, La Dolfina dashed Ellerstina’s hopes of a Triple Crown sweep and reversed two consecutive losses to the team in this year’s Argentine polo season.
Ellerstina may have won this year’s Tortugas and Hurlingham opens, but La Dolfina once again ends up with the sport’s biggest prize.

Is King Cambiaso’s Reign In Question?

The buzz about today’s Argentine Open final is that it’ll be one for the history books.
Rarely have two teams collided with so much momentum, talent and so much on the line.
La Dolfina is looking for a three-peat in the world’s most important tournament, while Ellerstina is aiming for a Triple Crown sweep .
Ellerstina, coached by Wellington resident Memo Gracida, has beaten La Dolfina twice this season but all bets are off for this one.
Beyond the team calculations is the question of player legacy.

Horse Talk

Anyone who knows polo will tell you the horses are at least 70 percent of the game. But they don’t get much ink in the press.
So when you have a chance to hear a polo player talk about his horses, it’s usually worth a listen.
Our attention is thusly called to a piece published in Wednesday’s La Nacion asking every member of the La Dolfina and Ellerstina teams to list their favorite horses and say who they are favoring in Saturday’s final.
As the article pointed out: “This Saturday’s finalists may be the best-mounted teams in the world . But there’s some horses that are outstanding, and every polo player has his favorites.”

It was a nail-biter for the defending champion, but La Dolfina came out ahead Saturday against El Paraiso.
Winning 15 to 14, La Dolfina will advance to next Saturday’s Argentine Open semi-final.
El Paraiso was leading La Dolfina after two chukkers of play, but La Dolfina rallied back with three goals in the third chukker and never trailed again.
Agustin Merlos of El Paraiso led all scorers with seven goals, while Adolfo Cambiaso knocked in six for La Dolfina.

A jersey for the Golden Bear

Adolfo Cambiaso’s press people sent out this photo today of golf legend Jack Nicklaus receiving one of Cambiaso’s own jerseys.
Nicklaus is in town this week to oversee construction of a signature golf course he’s building outside Buenos Aires.
Hopefully Cambiaso has a spare. He’ll need it this Saturday when La Dolfina plays El Paraiso.
Let’s see if the Bear himself comes to the matches.

Chapaleufu II wins in squeaker; Ellerstina cruises

The first nail-biter of the Argentine Open came Sunday, with the underdog knocking in the golden goal in an extra chukker.
Chapaleufu II squeaked by La Aguada with a 15-14 victory thanks to the overtime score by Eduardo Heguy.
The victory was plenty welcome for Chapaleufu, which has lost in the first round of the Argentine Open in each of the last two years.
In the day’s other game, Ellerstina continued rolling, bulldozing over outmatched Santa Maria de Lobos by 21-10.
Ellerstina’s Facundo Pieres led all scorers with nine goals.

There’s no doubt about Adolfo’s reign. I think is far from being jeopardized. He is the ultimate king of polo, only comparable to Mr. Harriot. La Dolfina will win today, no doubt about it..
